WORCESTER, MA- Seven Wheaton College men's tennis players combined for six singles wins and a trio of doubles victories in Monday's 9-0 shutout of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Clark University at the Corash Tennis Courts.
Originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, the match was bumped back due to inclement weather. Wheaton, which won for the ninth time in its last 11 contests, improved to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Cougars suffered their third straight loss to fall to 2-6 and 0-4.
Lyon senior Nii Manfoi Davies (Town & Country, MO/The Principia) and junior Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) set the tone early with an 8-3 doubles triumph in the second position.
Sophomores Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) won 8-4 at third doubles, while junior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Neall Oliver (Portland, ME/Deering) rounded out the wins with an 8-5 final in the top spot.
Four Lyons recorded straight-set singles victories, with Little, Hudgins and Altman surrendering no more than five games each in the second through fourth positions, respectively. Little was victorious by a 6-2, 6-3 count, Hudgins won 6-3, 6-1, while Altman earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Sophomore Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) cruised to a 6-1 opening-set triumph at number six before winning a tiebreaker in the second set.
Oliver and senior Adam Bisceglia (North Granby, CT/Granby Memorial) split their first two sets by 7-5 finals in the top position, but Oliver came out on top in the deciding set thanks to a 10-8 triumph in the super tiebreaker. After dropping his first set at number five, Krantz battled back to win 7-6 and 10-6 during the next two sets to complete the sweep
With today's win, the Lyons assured themselves of no worse than a third seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament. Before traveling to Babson College for the regular season finale on Saturday, Wheaton steps out of league play on Thursday for a road match at Salem State College at 4:00 p.m.
