Lyons finish six-match homestand at 5-1 after downing Union, 7-2

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team finished its six-match homestand with its fifth victory in the stretch, as the Lyons swept singles play to overcome a 2-1 doubles deficit during a 7-2 non-conference victory over Union College on Friday afternoon.

The teams finished doubles play on the Clark Tennis Courts before moving inside to Beard Field House for singles action. A winner in eight of its last 10 matches, Wheaton improves to 8-5, while the Dutchmen remain winless at 0-7.

Sophomores Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) came away with the lone doubles win for the Lyons, an 8-5 victory in the third slot.

The hosts responded in the singles portion of the match, posting five straight-set triumphs in the one through five positions, including a 6-0, 6-2 decision by freshman Neall Oliver (Portland, ME/Deering) in the top spot. Junior Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) also allowed just two games in the third position, winning by scores of 6-2 and 6-0.

Junior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) recorded a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at number two, while Altman and Krantz turned in 7-5, 6-1 and 6-2, 7-5 victories in the fourth and fifth slots, respectively. During the final match of the day, sophomore Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) won 8-3 in a pro set at number six.

Wheaton returns to conference play tomorrow at New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Clark University at 1:00 p.m.
