Women's Tennis (14-5, 5-2) Completes 2008-09 Season with Setback at Skidmore
The Wheaton College women's tennis team, which is ranked 11th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, completed its 2008-09 schedule with a 7-2 loss at nationally-ranked Skidmore College on Saturday, finishing the season tied for the school record for single-season victories. The Thoroughbreds stand 27th in the country and ninth in the region. Sophomores Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) provided the Lyons with their points, as each captured a singles match against a regionally-ranked player. Teague, who herself is ranked 23rd in the Northeast, downed the number-13 player, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the top spot, while Geocaris defeated the 20th-ranked athlete, 6-4, 7-6 at number two. In their final college action, seniors Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) narrowly fell in doubles by an 8-6 count in the second position.
