Wheaton takes two at Coast Guard to remain perfect in NEWMAC

Baseball • Saturday, April 4th, 2009

NEW LONDON, CT- The Wheaton College baseball team took two from host United States Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons grinded out an 8-6 victory in game one before hanging on for a 12-10 win in the second contest.

A winner in 19 of its last 20 games while remaining unbeaten through seven league contests, the Blue and White, which is ranked second nationally by D3baseball.com and first in the region by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA), raised its record to 20-2. Coast Guard fell to 6-15 and 2-4.

Wheaton responded from 2-1, 4-2 and 6-4 deficits in the opener, with junior Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) smacking a clutch two-out, two-run single in the sixth to give the Lyons a 7-6 edge. Senior closer Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) took care of the rest, setting down each of the six batters he faced for a two-inning save, as the righty fanned two.

Lieneck led four multiple hitters for Wheaton with four RBI, as he went 2-for-5. Sophomore Hadi Raad (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY/Hastings) batted 2-for-4 with two RBI, a run and a double, while junior Paul Malaguti (Andover, MA/Andover) and freshman Hal Landers (Salem, NH/Salem) each were 2-for-4 with a pair of runs. Junior Jason Clucas (Peabody, MA/Saint John's Prep) went deep, and sophomore lefty Chad Kasik (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) tossed a one-hit fifth with one strikeout to improve to 2-0.

For Coast Guard, senior Pete Schofield (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) was saddled with the loss, allowing seven earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks in six-plus innings. Offensively, junior Keith Laird (West Chester, PA/West Chester) was 3-for-4 with two runs, while sophomore Eddie Kalankiewicz (San Diego, CA/University City) went 2-for-3 and plated two runs.

Freshman Dan Haugh (Andover, MA/Saint John's Prep) paced Wheaton's attack in the nightcap, driving in six runs with three hits and two walks. Haugh, whose six RBI ties for the third-highest single-game total in program history, cleared the bases in the first with a two-bagger before knocking in two more the following frame.

The Lyons pushed across eight runs in the first three innings alone for an 8-4 edge, but the Bears trimmed their deficit to two by the sixth. Wheaton extended its lead back out to four with single runs in the sixth and seventh before Coast Guard capitalized on two defensive miscues in the home half of the seventh to knot the game at 10.

The visitors jammed the bags with one down in the ninth, as Haugh's single plated the game-winner and Malaguti's bases-loaded walk provided the Lyons with insurance. Wheaton survived a scare in the last half of the ninth, as Coast Guard's two-out rally fell short when Haugh's dive to the third base bag beat the runner for the force.

Senior Karl Olson (Bethel, ME/Gould Academy) got out of the ninth unscathed for his first save of the year. Classmate Jared Barnes (North Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) yielded one earned run in three relief innings for the win. Sophomore Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) joined Haugh with three hits, with Munley scoring twice and drawing two walks, while Landers went 2-for-5 with three runs, three RBI and his first collegiate homer. Lieneck was 2-for-4 with two runs, and Pecora scored three runs and had two walks.

Senior Bill Birch (Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame) led the Bears with three hits, two runs and a pair of RBI, while Kalankiewicz, junior John Jeffares (Saint Petersburg, FL/Lakewood) and freshman Nic Freburg (Palm Harbor, FL/Tarpon Springs) each had two hits. Freburg and freshman Joe Petry (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) scored two runs apiece, and senior Brian Yurovich (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro) drove in two. Sophomore Mike Ahlin (Longview, WA/R.A. Long) took the loss after surrendering three earned runs in 3.1 innings of relief.

The Lyons are back in action tomorrow at Sidell Stadium, where they will face nationally-ranked University of Southern Maine in a battle of top-10 teams at 1:00 p.m. The Huskies are ranked eighth in the country.
