SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY- The Wheaton College women's tennis team fell short of its quest to post a program-best 15th victory at nationally-ranked Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons finished out their spring slate with a 7-2 non-conference setback.
Wheaton, which is ranked 11th in the Northeast region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), ended the year at 14-5, while the Thoroughbreds, who stand 27th in the country and ninth in the region, improved to 9-3.
The match featured four regionally-ranked sophomore players in Wheaton's Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) and Skidmore's Rachel Loeb (Greenwood Village, CO/Cherry Creek) and Danika Robison (South Burlington, VT/South Burlington).
Loeb and Robison got the best of the fifth-ranked Lyon tandem by an 8-3 count at first doubles, as the hosts swept doubles play. Seniors Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) battled to an 8-6 setback at two, while freshmen Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) and Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) fell 8-2 in the third spot.
Geocaris and Teague bounced back from their doubles defeat during singles play. The 23rd-ranked Teague overcame a first-set deficit to knock off number-13 Robison, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the top spot, while Geocaris defeated 20th-ranked Loeb, 6-4, 7-6 at number two. Sophomore Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) captured a 6-4 victory in the first set of third singles before losing 7-6 and 6-0 during the next two.
