Garrity and Oliver cap Wheaton comeback as Lyons down Bears, 5-4

NORTON, MA- Freshman Neall Oliver (Portland, ME/Deering) rallied to win his singles match in a third-set tiebreaker, and sophomore Cullen Garrity's (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) ensuing victory capped the Wheaton College men's tennis team's 5-4 comeback triumph against the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

During a match that began on the Clark Tennis Courts during doubles and had the singles portion played out in Beard Field House, the Lyons won their fourth straight decision in improving to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Bears are now 5-5 and 1-1.

Wheaton won once in doubles but narrowly dropped the remaining two decisions, with sophomores Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) notching an 8-5 victory in the third position.

In the first and second slots, the Bears picked up 9-7 wins. At two, junior Chris Pappe (Kenosha, WI) and freshman Wesley Figaro (Jacksonville, FL) rallied for the final five games against Lyon senior Nii Manfoi Davies (Town & Country, MO/The Principia) and junior Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge). In the top position, freshmen Nick Martin (State College, PA) and Greg Mitchell (Keene, NH) edged out Oliver and junior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island).

In singles play, Little and Altman picked up straight-set victories in the second and fourth positions, respectively, but Figaro and Pappe also notched wins, helping the Bears maintain a 4-3 edge with the final two matches still being contested.

Oliver responded with a 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 victory in the top position against Mitchell, as the Lyon freshman trailed 5-1 in the third-set tiebreaker before rallying for a 9-7 win. With the teams knotted up at four and Garrity having already won his opening set, the sophomore completed the Wheaton comeback with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph in the sixth slot.

The Lyons host their fifth straight match on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. when they take on Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which has won all 10 NEWMAC regular season and tournament titles. The Engineers are ranked 12th in the Northeast region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
