Wheaton downs Framingham State, 18-3, extends home win streak to five

NORTON, MA- Senior Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) tallied four goals and classmate Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) recorded four assists to lead the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team to an 18-3 non-conference victory over Framingham State College on Wednesday at Keefe Field in the teams' first meeting.
Running their home winning streak to five games, the Lyons improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Rams slipped to 2-2.
Grant set Wheaton's tone early with a pair of goals in the first 28 seconds before Framingham sophomore Stephanie Corrales (Framingham, MA/Framingham) cut her team's deficit in half at 26:55. It was all Wheaton after that, as the hosts ripped off 13 straight tallies en route to a 15-1 advantage 5:04 into the second half.
Grant, junior Hanna Landis (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) and freshman Brittany Whynot (Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills) each finished with a first-half hat trick, as the Lyons carried a commanding 14-1 lead into the break. Also in the half, freshman Courtney Gleason (Newtown, CT/Newtown) picked up her first two collegiate goals and classmate Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown) scored her initial tally.
The Rams made it a 15-3 game with back-to-back goals by the 16:18 mark of the second frame before three different Wheaton players found the back of the net in the final 12 minutes for the final differential. Freshmen Hannah Ferris (Rye, NH/Portsmouth) and Hannah Knowles (North Kingstown, RI/Rocky Hill School) scored their initial tallies as collegians.
Landis finished with three goals and one assist, sophomore Tess Meyer (Concord, NH/Concord) recorded one tally and two helpers, while Ferris and senior Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) had a goal and an assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) turned away two shots in the win.
Corrales paced the Rams with a pair of goals, while sophomore goalie Allesha Kenyon (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) accounted for eight stops.
The Lyons turn their attention back to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on Saturday at Springfield College at 12:00 p.m.
