Women's Tennis (14-4, 5-2) Hosts Own Invitational, Lyons Win Four of Five Flights
The Wheaton College women's tennis team, which is ranked 11th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, had athletes combine to win two of three singles flights and both doubles competitions during the Wheaton Invitational on Sunday. Lyons joined athletes from Division I College of the Holy Cross, Division II Bentley College and Division III foe Roger Williams University.
During singles play, sophomores Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) and Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) captured invitational crowns in the first and second flights, respectively, for the second straight season. Teague downed a Bentley foe in the opening round before dispatching an opponent from Holy Cross in the final. Geocaris corralled wins against competitors from Holy Cross and Roger Williams, respectively. Sophomore Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) narrowly came up short in her first-round match in third singles, losing both of her sets by 7-6 counts in a tiebreaker against a Bentley athlete. In the consolation final, Van Faasen rebounded with a quick win versus a Roger Williams foe. After losing the second-doubles title match at last year's invitational, seniors Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) teamed up to grab the crown in first doubles. The duo knocked off a Hawk tandem before edging out Bentley in the final. Freshmen Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) and Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) combined to knock off a Crusader pair before winning the title against a Bentley twosome.
