Weekly Lyon Update: Women's Lacrosse

Women's Lacrosse (4-2, 1-0) Begins NEWMAC Schedule by Downing Mount Holyoke

The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team went 1-2 last week, picking up a 16-14 victory over visiting Mount Holyoke College on Saturday in each squad's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener but falling against a pair of New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) institutions. The Lyons dropped a 14-3 decision at Bowdoin College on Wednesday and an 18-7 contest at Wesleyan University on Sunday.

At Bowdoin, Wheaton only trailed by two goals with fewer than seven minutes remaining in the opening half. Freshman Brittany Whynot (Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills) scored twice for the Lyons, while sophomore Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) made 14 saves.

The Blue and White pushed out to a 14-8 advantage against Mount Holyoke before holding on for the win. Whynot scored a season-high six times, junior Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) tallied four goals and one assist, sophomore Tess Meyer (Concord, NH/Concord) had two goals, and senior Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) added a goal and four assists, coming within one helper of a nine-year-old school record. Senior Abbie Sherwin (Rye, NH/Portsmouth), junior Hanna Landis (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) and freshman Hailey Colburn (Concord, NH/Concord) turned in one goal and one assist each, while Marcellino had 11 stops.

At Wesleyan, the teams stood tied at two with fewer than 14 minutes remaining in the opening half before the Cardinals pulled away. Senior Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) scored five times, Thornton had two goals and an assist, while junior Chrissy Norberg (Winchester, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) added a pair of helpers. Marcellino made 10 saves between the pipes.

Thornton is tied for seventh in program history in career assists (33) and stands ninth in draw controls (83). Grant has 91 career points in 49 games, while Thornton has 86 points in 55 games.
