Men's Tennis (5-4, 1-0) Wins Twice, Begins NEWMAC Slate with Victory Over Springfield
The Wheaton College men's tennis team won both of its matches last week, downing visiting University of Massachusetts at Boston, 9-0 on Tuesday before knocking off Springfield College, 6-3 in the Lyons' New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday.
Against UMass-Boston, all six singles players picked up straight-set wins, with freshman Neall Oliver's (Portland, ME/Deering) 7-6, 6-3 victory in the top spot the closest match. Juniors Chapman Beekman (South Kingstown, RI/South Kingstown), Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and sophomores Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) were also victorious. During doubles play, the tandems of Little/Oliver, Hudgins/senior Nii Manfoi Davies (Town & Country, MO/The Principia) and Altman/Krantz yielded a total of seven games.
The duos of Davies/Hudgins and Altman/Krantz downed Springfield opponents before the Lyons took four of six singles matches. Altman, Hudgins, Little and Oliver were each victorious in straight sets.
