Three event wins push Lyons to top-10 marks at Tufts' Snowflake Classic

MEDFORD, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's outdoor track & field teams combined to win three events to open their seasons at the Tufts University Snowflake Classic on Saturday, with each squad capturing top-10 finishes at the Dussault Track & Field Complex.

The women finished eighth in the 16-team field with 26 points, while the men tallied 30 points in taking ninth among 13 squads. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) won the men's meet with 141 points, while the Boston University women were victorious with 181 points.

Senior Morgan Jamiel (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) posted the top time of 15.74 in the 100-meter hurdles, while classmate Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) registered fourth-place marks in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs. There were 47 competitors in the 800 and 56 in the 1,500.

Wheaton's 4×100-meter relay also turned in a fourth-place finish, as senior Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) joined junior Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver), sophomore Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope) and freshman Didine Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical).

For the men, senior Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) and junior Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) finished first in the 100- and 400-meter dashes, respectively. Wright crossed the line in 11.08, while Ibric bested a 33-athlete field in 49.52.

Junior Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) produced a third-place result in the 400-meter hurdles during his initial competition of the year, and freshman Kyle Ricci (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) placed fifth in the 400-meter race.

The Lyons stay local one week from today with Stonehill College's Skyhawk Invitational set for an 11:00 a.m. start.
