BRUNSWICK, ME- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team trailed just 4-2 with fewer than seven minutes to go in the first half on Wednesday night at Bowdoin College's Ryan Field before coming up short against the Polar Bears, 14-3. The Lyons suffered their first loss during their initial road game of the season, falling to 3-1, while Bowdoin improved to 4-3.
In its first action since last Wednesday, Wheaton yielded the opening goal after 1:28 but knotted the score just 40 seconds later on senior Caitlin Grant's (Walpole, MA/Walpole) 15th tally of the spring. After Bowdoin scored at 24:50, neither team found the back of the net again for nearly eight minutes until the hosts tallied twice in a 1:30 span.
With her team down by three, freshman Brittany Whynot (Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills) brought Wheaton within 4-2 with 6:52 left in the opening half, but the Polar Bears tallied exactly 40 seconds later to spark an 8-0 stretch. Whynot scored to snap the run with 13:47 remaining in regulation before the hosts tacked on two more goals.
By recording a pair of tallies, Whynot pushed her season total to seven, while senior Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) and freshman Hailey Colburn (Concord, NH/Concord) each added an assist. Sophomore Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) made 14 saves, including 11 in the first half.
Freshman McKenna Teague (Cohasset, MA/Notre Dame Academy) had four goals for Bowdoin, sophomore Ingrid Oelschlager (Roanoke, VA/Phillips Exeter Academy) added a hat trick, and senior Steph Collins-Finn (Menands, NY/Albany Academy) made seven stops.
The Lyons return home on Saturday for their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener against Mount Holyoke College at 1:00 p.m.
