Lyons begin six-match homestand with shutout over UMass-Boston

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team began its spring home slate with a 9-0 non-conference triumph over visiting University of Massachusetts at Boston on Tuesday afternoon in Beard Field House. The Lyons even their record at 4-4, while the Beacons slip to 0-2.
The hosts recorded a pair of 8-2 doubles victories and another 8-3 win to take an early 3-0 lead. Junior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Neall Oliver (Portland, ME/Deering) earned their team-best fifth doubles triumph of the season with an 8-2 final in the top spot.
Sophomores Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) won 8-2 in the third position, while senior Nii Manfoi Davies (Town & Country, MO/The Principia) and junior Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) collected an 8-3 victory at number two.
Four Lyons blanked their opponents during their opening sets in singles play before recording straight-set wins, as Little, Hudgins, Altman and junior Chapman Beekman (South Kingstown, RI/South Kingstown) downed their counterparts in the second, third, fourth and sixth slots, respectively.
Krantz posted a 6-1, 6-1 triumph in the fifth singles position, while Oliver helped complete the sweep with a 7-6, 6-3 result over senior Paul Braude (West Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) at number one.
Wheaton continues a six-match homestand on Saturday against Springfield College in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener at 1:00 p.m.
