Women's Tennis (14-4) Goes 3-1 in Hilton Head, Matches School Record for Victories
The Wheaton College women's tennis team, which is ranked 11th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, went 3-1 during its annual trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina, in the process tying a program record for season victories, a mark last matched in 1994-95. The Lyons opened play with a 7-2 loss to Division II Brevard College of North Carolina on March 8 but rebounded with a narrow 5-4 win on March 9 over Ithaca College of New York, which was ranked 19th in the ITA's Northeast poll. Wheaton blanked New York-based Saint John Fisher College, 9-0 on Tuesday before finishing its trip with an 8-1 triumph against Baldwin-Wallace College of Ohio on Wednesday.
During the Lyons' match against Brevard, Wheaton received both of its points thanks to senior Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery), who rallied from one set down for a singles victory after pairing with classmate Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) for a doubles win.
Wheaton swept doubles play versus Ithaca and held on for the win with a pair of singles triumphs. The duos of Farmer/Federico, sophomores Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School)/Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) and sophomore Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional)/freshman Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) all won, while Geocaris and Teague both picked up singles wins.
The Lyons blanked Saint John Fisher for their 10th shutout of the season. The doubles pairings of Geocaris/Teague, Chesky/Van Faasen and Farmer/Federico all won, while Chesky, Farmer, Federico, Geocaris, Teague and Van Faasen each picked up singles victories in straight sets.
In Wheaton's final match of the trip, the tandems of Geocaris/Teague, Chesky/Van Faasen and Farmer/Federico each notched doubles wins against Baldwin-Wallace. During singles action, Chesky, Farmer, Geocaris, Teague and Van Faasen all triumphed.
