FORT MYERS, FL- Senior Stacey Kelleher (Brockton, MA/Brockton) notched her 100th career hit while tying a Wheaton College softball record by scoring four times during the Lyons' five-inning, 17-1 victory over Wheelock College on Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Lee County Sports Complex. The Lyons, who are now 6-4, opened the day with a 3-2, nine-inning loss to Ohio Wesleyan University, wasting a stellar outing by junior Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro).
Bagley fanned a career-high nine batters against the Battling Bishops while carrying a two-hit shutout until two were down in the seventh inning. Wheaton scored the first run of the game on sophomore Katy Salka's (Ayer, MA/Ayer) two-out single in the top half of the seventh, but Ohio Wesleyan knotted the game with a two-out hit of their own in the home portion of the frame following a Lyon defensive miscue. Bagley's seventh strikeout ended the threat with a runner on first.
After the teams exchanged missed opportunities provided by the international tiebreaker in the eighth, sophomore Kristin Hunt (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) smacked a 2-2 pitch up the middle leading off the ninth to plate classmate Marissa Hobocan (Shelton, CT/Saint Joseph), and the Lyons eventually had two on with only one out before being unable to capitalize further. In the bottom of the inning, Ohio Wesleyan scored the tying run on a groundout and won on a one-out RBI single to center.
Bagley yielded five hits over 8.1 innings, with all three runs unearned, while the only walk she issued was to the first batter of the contest. Hunt and freshman Amanda Poplaski (North Reading, MA/North Reading) had two hits apiece for the Lyons. Junior Rachel Seibel (Johnstown, OH/Johnstown-Monroe) earned the win for the 4-1 Battling Bishops, allowing seven hits during a complete-game effort while striking out 10.
Against Wheelock, the Lyons scored three times in each the first and third innings before putting the game away with 11 runs on 10 hits in the fourth, keyed by Hunt's three-run double and a two-run homer off the bat of senior Brady Benton (Concord, NH/Concord). Wheaton totaled 18 hits.
Kelleher, who was playing in her 85th career contest, picked up her 100th hit on a clean single through the right side leading off the third inning. She finished 2-for-2 with two walks while becoming the first Lyon to score four runs since April 13, 2003. Hunt added a 3-for-4 effort, driving in four runs while scoring three more. Benton was 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs.
Freshman Staley Salazar (Lakewood, CO/Bear Creek) scored three times and had two hits, classmate Valerie Tratner (Forest Hills, NY/Saint Francis Prep) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Poplaski added a pair of singles. Salka plated two runs, and sophomore Nicole DeRosa (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) scored twice. In addition to going 2-for-3, freshman Mary Fay (Stoughton, MA/Cardinal Spellman) earned the win, allowing four hits while striking out three in five innings. Freshman Nicole Perullo (Revere, MA) took the loss for the 0-6 Wildcats.
Wheaton completes its season-opening run of 12 games in six days tomorrow against Bowdoin College at 9:00 a.m. and Curry College at 11:00 a.m.
