NORTON, MA- Wheaton College softball senior Stacey Kelleher (Brockton, MA/Brockton) and freshman Mary Fay (Stoughton, MA/Cardinal Spellman) swept the first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly awards of the season for the week ending on Sunday, March 8.
A first baseman, Kelleher was named conference player of the week for the second time of her career, while Fay earned pitcher-of-the-week honors.
Kelleher, who was selected to a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America team as a junior, helped lead the Lyons to a 3-1 record in Fort Myers, Florida, behind a .455 average, .818 slugging percentage and .571 on-base percentage. She drove in three runs and scored five while smacking a homer and double and drawing two walks.
In Wheaton's season-opening 7-2 win over Elms College on Saturday, Kelleher hit a two-run homer, scored twice, walked and was hit by a pitch before adding two hits and two runs in the second contest, a 4-3 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
On Sunday, the lefty hitter scored a run and drew a walk during Wheaton's 2-1 win against Drew University. In the day's second game, Kelleher was 2-for-3 with an RBI double in a 5-2 loss to Saint Mary's University of Indiana. The converted shortstop was also flawless in 27 chances.
Fay earned a win in each of her first two collegiate appearances without yielding a run during seven innings of work. The righty hurler struck out three batters and scattered six hits.
In her debut on Saturday, Fay tossed three frames of relief to notch the win during Wheaton's victory over RPI, as she allowed three hits and fanned two batters. On Sunday, Fay again came out of the bullpen, this time going four innings while surrendering three hits in the one-run triumph over Drew.
The Lyons continue their 12-game southern swing with a pair of contests today against the College of Wooster in Ohio at 1:00 p.m. and Saint Joseph's College of Maine at 3:00 p.m.
