Wheaton hits the court for first time since October during spring trip

HILTON HEAD, SC- The Wheaton College women's tennis team returned to action on Sunday for the first time since October 26, kicking off a four-match road trip to South Carolina with a 7-2 setback against Division II Brevard College. The Lyons, who are ranked 11th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, fell to 11-4, while the North Carolina-based Tornados are now 5-3.
Wheaton dropped a pair of close doubles matches before notching a victory to head into singles down 2-1, as seniors Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) picked up an 8-4 triumph in the third position.
Sophomores Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) fell by an 8-6 count at number one, while the second-slot tandem of sophomore Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) and freshman Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) suffered an 8-5 defeat.
The Tornados pulled away during singles play, capturing five matches. Farmer had Wheaton's lone win, rallying for a 0-6, 6-4, 10-6 victory in the fifth position. Chesky and Teague each saw a one-set lead slip away, with Teague falling 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 in the first position and Chesky dropping a 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 decision at four.
Wheaton continues play tomorrow against New York-based Ithaca College at 11:30 a.m.
