PHOENIX, AZ- Senior righthander Adam Gingras (Woonsocket, RI/Woonsocket) tossed seven solid innings and freshman Dan Haugh (Andover, MA/Saint John's Prep) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a pair of runs and a two-run homer to lead the nationally-ranked Wheaton College baseball team to a 6-1 season-opening win over Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on Saturday.
Ranked 19th in the most recent D3baseball.com national poll, the Lyons plated the game's final five runs en route to the victory during their first meeting with the Tigers. RIT slipped to 2-5.
After each team pushed across a run in the first inning, a two-run rally with two down in the fifth gave Wheaton the lead for good. After sophomore Sean Munley's (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) second career triple hugged the right field line, Haugh launched his deep ball over the left field fence in just his third career plate appearance, providing the Lyons with a 3-1 edge.
The Blue and White tacked on a run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to complete the scoring. Sophomore Eric Laliberte (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) sacrificed in junior Sean Buckley (Webster, MA/Bartlett) with a fly ball to left for a 4-1 Lyon advantage, while sophomore Hadi Raad (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY/Hastings) delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single through the left side, as four of Wheaton's six runs came with two down.
After surrendering a run early in the first frame, Gingras settled in to retire 12 out of 13 batters into the fifth. A winner in nine straight decisions, the All-America hurler scattered six hits while fanning four and walking none in seven innings of work. Sophomore Chad Kasik (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and junior Jon Shepard (Salisbury, MA/Triton Regional) tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively, with each adding a strikeout.
Offensively, junior Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA/Xavier Brothers) and freshman Hal Landers (Salem, NH/Salem) each went 2-for-4, with Landers swiping two bags, Raad drew a pair of walks and stole a base, while Buckley had a steal and was hit by a pitch.
For the second straight day, Wheaton faces a team for the first time, as the Lyons entertain Saint John's University of Minnesota on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
