Four NCAA marks, three event wins carry Lyons at USATF regional meet

CAMBRIDGE, MA- Four NCAA Championship provisional qualifying marks and three event wins carried the Wheaton College men's and women's track & field teams during the USA Track & Field (USATF) New England Championship on Sunday at Harvard University's Gordon Indoor Track and Tennis Center.
Freshman Mickey Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) notched two of the women's three provisional standards in the long and triple jumps, landing a pair of runner-up showings, including the top collegiate triple jump of 38′ 3 1/4″, which was 3 1/2″ shy of an automatic qualifying mark. Her leap in the long jump went for 17′ 11 1/2″. Classmate Ashley Dell'Aira (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) finished behind Jusme in the triple jump with a provisional mark of 36′ 10 1/2″.
The women also accounted for two event wins, both coming in relays, as Wheaton's 4×440-yard and distance medley teams each led their respective fields. With a time of 4:05.50, the 4×440-yard quartet, comprised of seniors Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton), sophomore Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope) and freshman Jenifer DeNormandie (Bethel, ME/Telstar Regional), edged Division I Brown University by 0.36 seconds. Seniors Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), Miriam Ledley (Needham, MA/Needham) and Christine Moreau (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln) and junior Katie Pratt (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) made up the DMR.
Several top-five finishes highlighted a strong showing by the Lyons, with Smith placing second in the 60-meter dash in 7.99, which was the top collegiate time. Freshman Didine Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) secured fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, while Mickey Jusme was fourth in the 60M dash.
Four Lyons recorded fifth-place marks, including junior Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) in the 400M dash, sophomores Caleigh Greenwell (Warwick, RI/La Salle Academy) and Erin Neville (North Providence, RI/La Salle Academy) in the weight throw and high jump, respectively, and first-year Leah-Perle Bloomenstein (West Bloomfield, MI/Walled Lake Northern) in the shot put.
For the men, freshman Cailean Robinson (Newton, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy) reached an NCAA Championship provisional time in the 60M dash at 6.95, falling 0.03 ticks shy of the winner from Brown. Three of the top six finishers were Wheaton athletes, with senior Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) taking fifth and junior Mark Cimino (Danbury, CT/Danbury) placing sixth.
The Lyons turned in a smattering of top-five finishes, including the top distance medley relay team, consisting of senior Brian Dundon (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield), sophomores Colin Fahey (Waltham, MA/Weston) and Nick Kacher (Waltham, MA/Waltham), and freshman Dylan Treivush (Beverly Hills, CA/Harvard-Westlake School). In the 400M dash, Wright was the runner up, freshman Kyle Ricci (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) captured fourth and Dundon was sixth. Ricci came in fourth during the 200M dash.
Robinson posted a fifth-place standing in the long jump, junior Michael Latner (Torrance, CA/West) was fifth in the pole vault, and freshman Marcus Dennis (Hyde Park, MA/Thayer Academy) added a fifth-place mark in the triple jump. Freshman Kyle Souza's (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) heave in the shot put was good for seventh.
The Lyons wrap up the month of February at next weekend's two-day All New England Championship at Boston University. The meet begins on Friday with a scheduled start time of 10:00 a.m.
