Women's Basketball's (12-9, 6-3) Hickey Becomes Program's All-Time Leading Scorer
The Wheaton College women's basketball team split a pair of contests for the fourth straight week last week, while senior Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) became the program's career scoring leader. The Lyons fell to visiting Babson College, 67-63 on Wednesday before downing the United States Coast Guard Academy, 51-35 on Saturday in Norton. The Blue and White went 21-4 in its last 25 contests against league foes and won 15 of its last 16 at home against NEWMAC counterparts. With four games remaining, Wheaton is tied for fourth in the conference standings with Clark University.
Hickey canned a three at 14:24 of the second half to break Allyson Aube's '95 14-year-old career scoring record, in the process giving Wheaton a 32-29 lead after Babson had used an 11-0 run to rally from a seven-point deficit, but the Beavers later went up by 10 and held off the Lyons. Hickey shot 6-of-11 for 16 points while notching eight rebounds and four assists, and senior Bri Smith (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) added 13 points. Junior Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while classmate Ida Kruse (Vershire, VT/Rivendell Academy) turned in eight points and seven boards in a career-high 27 minutes off the bench.
Wheaton used an early 10-0 run to go on top for good before a late 11-0 jaunt put the Lyons in control. The Blue and White held a 30-2 advantage in points off of turnovers, as Smith led the offense with 14 points thanks to 4-of-9 three-point shooting. Senior Jennie Pleat (Nashua, NH/Nashua South) went 5-of-8 in scoring 10 points, Hickey had seven points, six assists and five rebounds, and junior Andrea Bailey (Needham, MA/Needham) notched five assists and six boards.
Hickey now has 1,466 career points and sits second in career field goals (557), fifth in free throws (257), seventh in three-pointers (95) and 10th in both rebounds (573) and assists (220). With two more points, she would become the first Lyon ever with four 300-point seasons. Hickey is the only player in program history with at least 500 career points, 350 rebounds, 100 assists, 100 steals, 50 three-pointers and 25 blocks. She and Smith are tied for eighth in games played (105), while Pleat is tied for fifth (106), having tied Jennifer Landry's '93 record of 106 consecutive games played. Champney is first in career blocks (110) and tied for fourth in a single season (41), Smith is second in career threes (151), and Bailey is sixth in assists (288). With 107 assists, Bailey joins Sharon Morrisseau '89 and former teammate Casey Sorbara '07 as the only players in program history with multiple 100-assist seasons.
