Chils' four victories lift Wheaton past host Keuka, 96-88

KEUKA PARK, NY- The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team won for the third time in four scored events this season by downing host Keuka College, 96-88 on Sunday at Ayers Pool, completing a two-meet weekend trek to New York. The Lyons tied the Storm for second place on Saturday during the three-team Canisius College Invitational.

Wheaton athletes won three figures competitions and a trio of routine categories, as freshman Amanda Chils (Lakeland, FL/George Jenkins) played a role in a team-high four victories. Chils took C figures with a score of 67.425 points and teamed with classmate Christiana Butera (San Diego, CA/Academy of Our Lady of Peace) to perform the top duet, earning 80.333 points. Butera and Chils joined junior Laura Montes (San Juan, PR/Academia San Jose) to win trio with 78.833 points, nipping another Wheaton trio by 0.166 points.

During the team routine, Butera, Chils and Montes sided with senior Sharada Strasmore (Weston, CT/Weston), junior Jenna Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden) and freshmen Rachel Cordo (Wayzata, MN/Wayzata) and Anastasia Hare (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) to capture the competition with 83.083 points, beating out a pair of Keuka groupings. The Storm's top team totaled 81.000 points.

Montes earned critical points by winning the three-swimmer A figures event with 80.468 points before her second-place solo routine received 80.167 points, leaving her just 0.333 shy of a first-place Keuka athlete. Strasmore topped a six-competitor field in B figures behind 71.608 points, edging out the second-place finisher, Butera, by 1.328 points. Swinkin was fourth, falling just 0.158 points short of third.

Hare and Cordo were second and third, respectively, during C figures, as their scores came within 0.121 of one another, while Cordo, Strasmore and Swinkin totaled 78.667 points during a second-place trio finish. In duet, Cordo and Swinkin notched 78.000 points to take third, being clipped by a Keuka squad by 0.833 points.

Wheaton breaks from action for two weeks, returning to the pool on February 22 at the Boston University Tri-Meet, which begins at 2:00 p.m.
