Mickey Jusme
NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's track & field freshman Mickey Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Co-Field Athlete of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, February 1. The accolade was her third in four weeks, as Jusme shared the honor with Hamilton College senior Akilah Bond.
Jusme won two events while helping the Lyons win their own Wheaton Invitational on Saturday, topping a 12-team field during their first home event since 2003. Jusme captured both the triple jump and long jump competitions, surpassing a provisional distance for the NCAA Championship with a triple jump leap of 37′ 6″. Her long jump showing of 16′ 7 3/4″ edged out a second-place teammate by 3 1/4″. During the 55-meter dash, her lone track event, Jusme took third in 7.58, falling shy of the runner up by only 0.01 seconds.
Entering competition this weekend, Jusme is third in the nation for both the triple jump and long jump this season. As one of only three athletes to have automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship in the triple jump, her showing of 38′ 9 1/2″ from January 11 is 5 1/2″ shy of the top showing in Division III this year. Jusme's leap of 18′ 5″ in the long jump on January 16 has her just 2 1/4″ short of the national leader and is the best showing by a non-senior.
The Lyon men's and women's teams return to action this weekend at the New York City Armory, as the two-day New Balance Collegiate Invitational kicks off on Friday.
