Lyons combine for 22 event victories in dual sweep of league foe Babson

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving squads completed their regular season home slates by each downing New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) counterpart Babson College on Saturday in Balfour Natatorium. The Lyon women improved to 6-5-1 behind a 171-104 victory, while the men are 3-9 after a 159-122 win.
Freshman Julia Wright (Pomfret, VT/Northfield Mount Hermon School) won the one- and three-meter diving events, posting 242.39 points in the one-meter dive to miss an NCAA Championship standard by just 2.61 points. Sophomore Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) played a hand in a team-high three of Wheaton's 12 event wins while nearly meeting a school record.
Zais posted a time of 2:28.95 in the 200-yard breaststroke, coming within 1.55 seconds of a program mark, and was on the top 400-yard medley relay, which won by nearly 10 seconds. In capturing the 50-yard freestyle, Zais edged out classmate Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) by 0.26 ticks.
Joining Zais on the 400 medley relay were Piscetta, junior Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Taryn Brosnan (Westford, MA/Academy of Notre Dame). Brosnan also won the 100-yard butterfly, while Meehan topped the 100-yard backstroke field. Piscetta was another multiple-event winner, taking the 200-yard individual medley, while sophomore Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) clocked in with the fastest times in both the 100 breaststroke and 100 free.
Rounding out the winners on the women's squad were junior Sarah Houlihan (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) in the 1,000 free and freshman Sarah Miller (Madison, NJ/Madison) in the 200 free, as she edged out the second-place finisher from Babson by 0.03 seconds.
A trio of men won two events apiece, as sophomore Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep) won 200 fly and 200 IM races, classmate Jonathan Gold (West Harrison, NY/Fordham Prep) swept the one- and three-meter dives, and freshman Trevor Deans (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) topped the 100 and 200 breast fields.
Among Wheaton's 10 event wins, two came narrowly over second-place Babson finishers. Freshman Alex Hosey (Danville, PA/Wyoming Seminary) edged out a visiting competitor by 0.11 seconds in the 500 free, while sophomore Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) won the 100 fly race by 0.22 ticks.
Freshman Cole Larson-Whittaker (Penobscot, ME/George Stevens Academy) captured the 200 free, while sophomore Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) outdistanced the closest 1,000 free finisher by more than a minute and 15 seconds.
Both Lyon teams return to action on Tuesday during a double-dual meet at Division II Bentley College. In addition to facing the Falcons, Wheaton will oppose local foe Bridgewater State College in a meet set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
