Wheaton swim teams score pair of close decisions over visiting Brandeis

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams earned critical points down the stretch Wednesday night to knock off non-conference foe Brandeis University in thrilling fashion at Balfour Natatorium, with the Lyon women earning the victory during the final event.

The women clinched a 125-118 triumph after taking the top two spots in the 400-yard freestyle relay to improve to 4-4-1, while the men secured the victory by scoring six points in the 400 free relay to win 118-113 and move to 2-7.

Senior Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and sophomores Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial), Sara Hollar (La Crescenta, CA/Flintridge Prep) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) scored necessary points during their top finish in the 400 free relay.

Sophomores Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) and Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) captured top finishes in the 50 and 100 free events, respectively. The hosts also secured runner-up spots during 12 events, led by freshmen Taryn Brosnan (Westford, MA/Academy of Notre Dame) and Sarah Miller (Madison, NJ/Madison), who each had a hand in three.

Brosnan placed second in the 200 breaststroke and butterfly events while swimming a leg on the 400 medley relay team, joining Farrell, Perkins and junior Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island). Miller was the runner up in the 500 and 1,000 free races while leading off for the second-place 400 free relay team. Senior Kelly Grant (South Salem, NY/John Jay), junior Aurelie Marcotte (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and freshman Catherine Army (Pomfret, CT/Pomfret) were also on the relay.

The men won four events while utilizing their depth in posting 10 second-place marks. Sophomore Jonathan Gold (West Harrison, NY/Fordham Prep) swept the one- and three-meter dives, while classmate Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) and freshman Devon Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) collected wins in the 200 free and back, respectively.

Best and Dean-Lee sided with sophomore Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) and freshman Cole Larson-Whittaker (Penobscot, ME/George Stevens Academy) to place second in the 400 medley relay. Dean-Lee and Fichman-Klein were the runners up in the 100 and 50 free, respectively, sophomore Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) landed a pair of second-place spots in the 200 butterfly and individual medley, while freshman Trevor Deans (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) came in second during the one- and three-meter dives.

The Lyons return to Balfour Natatorium on Saturday for a double-dual meet against New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foes Connecticut College and Trinity College. Action is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
