GAINESVILLE, FL- The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team used a balanced scoring effort to win the University of Florida Figures Meet on Saturday, scoring 29 points to the second-place Gators' 28, as the two schools competed in four figures categories but did not perform routines. It was the Blue and White's first meet since November 23.
The Lyons won only one of the four categories, with junior Laura Montes (San Juan, PR/Academia San Jose) capturing the A figures event behind a score of 76.434, narrowly beating out a Gator counterpart, the only other competitor, by 1.289 points.
In B, a Florida swimmer topped the four-athlete field, but Lyons grabbed the next three spots. Freshman Christiana Butera (San Diego, CA/Academy of Our Lady of Peace), senior Sharada Strasmore (Weston, CT/Weston) and junior Jenna Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden) held down the second, third and fourth positions, respectively.
During the eight-swimmer C figures event, Gators nabbed the first and second spots, but freshman Amanda Chils (Lakeland, FL/George Jenkins) totaled 64.898 points to come within 0.149 points of the winner while taking third. Classmates Rachel Cordo (Wayzata, MN/Wayzata) and Anastasia Hare (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) were fifth and sixth, respectively, to finish ahead of the final two Florida competitors. No Lyons entered the D category, as the lone two finishers were Gators.
The Lyons break from action until Saturday, January 31, when they host the Wheaton Invitational at 2:00 p.m.
