BRUNSWICK, ME- Senior Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) moved into second place on the Wheaton College women's basketball career scoring list, but the Lyons finished up a two-day run at Bowdoin College's Coast Maine Classic with a 64-39 loss to the host Polar Bears on Wednesday in Morrell Gymnasium. Hickey was also named to the all-tournament team.
The Lyons slipped to 5-5, while Bowdoin, which has been to the past eight NCAA Tournaments, improved to 8-2. The Polar Bears are receiving votes in the D3hoops.com poll.
Hickey, who entered the day with 1,307 points, finished with 16 during the contest. In the first half, she passed Cathy Silva '94 (1,313) for third place in program history before slipping by Christine Whelan '95 (1,322) and alone into second thanks to a pair of free throws with 4:38 remaining in the contest. With 1,323 points, she trails only Allyson Aube '95 (1,450).
Wheaton struggled to maintain control of the ball during the opening half, committing four turnovers in the opening 2:02 before attempting its first shot, a good Hickey jumper that brought the Lyons within 3-2 at the 17:19 mark. Bowdoin scored the next nine points to capture a 10-point lead, but Hickey hit another shot before junior Stephanie Walker (Somers, CT/Somers) followed her own miss with a board and a putback to make it 12-6 at 14:08.
Another Hickey jumper at 10:42 made it 13-8, and senior Jennie Pleat's (Nashua, NH/Nashua South) bucket at 7:21 kept Wheaton within striking distance at 21-12, but the Polar Bears reeled off a 14-0 run to end the half. The Lyons were held to 0-of-8 shooting from the floor with a pair of missed free throws and three turnovers during their scoreless stretch, while Bowdoin shot a modest 6-of-15.
For the half, Hickey scored eight of Wheaton's 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting, while the remaining Lyons were a combined 2-of-14. The Blue and White committed 16 turnovers, and Bowdoin was aided by a 4-of-9 three-point effort and had only eight giveaways.
In the second stanza, the Lyons stuck with Bowdoin, being outscored by only a 29-27 margin. Wheaton matched its first-half output after just 9:48 of action when Pleat grabbed an offensive board and junior Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) dropped in a hoop, but by then the Polar Bears had already nabbed three 30-point leads. After being down 52-22, Wheaton mounted an 11-2 run during a 2:31 span to pull within 21 thanks to points from five players but came no closer.
The Lyons had only six turnovers in the second half, forcing 11 by Bowdoin. Pleat led the Lyons with four assists for the game while adding five points, and Champney had six points.
