Champney's 22 leads four in double figures, Wheaton notches 75-66 win

BRISTOL, RI- Junior Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) matched her career high with 22 points as one of four players in double digits, propelling the Wheaton College women's basketball team past Roger Williams University, 75-66 in non-conference action on Tuesday in the RWU Recreation Center. The Lyons improved to 4-2, while the Hawks fell to 2-3.

Senior Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) shot 5-of-7 for 15 points while adding five rebounds, as she moved into fourth place in program history with 1,244 career points. Champney added five boards while going 6-of-7 from the charity stripe and, by recording two blocks, she moved into third in program history with 80 rejections for her career.

Junior Andrea Bailey (Needham, MA/Needham) had a double-double for the Lyons, totaling career highs of 18 points and 10 assists while turning the ball over only three times. She came within two helpers of a school mark, collecting the most by a Blue and White player since January 13, 2007, and added four steals and four rebounds. Senior Jennie Pleat (Nashua, NH/Nashua South) had a season-high 11 points, while classmate Bri Smith (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) added five assists.

Wheaton's starters tallied 70 of the team's 75 points, as the Lyons shot 48.3 percent from the floor, committed only 14 turnovers and tried 21 free throws. Conversely, Roger Williams gave the ball away 31 times, as Wheaton notched 15 steals, and attempted only seven freebies.

The hosts scored the first hoop of the game after 42 seconds, but Wheaton responded with a 10-0 run during an ensuing 2:55 span, with Hickey scoring five points and Bailey playing a role in five. After the Hawks chipped to within 12-9, Bailey nailed a three at the 14:24 mark, and the Lyons extended their lead to as many as 12 points at 23-11 when Smith converted a Hickey feed for two at the 10-minute mark.

Roger Williams twice made it a three-point game, but Wheaton held the hosts without a shot during the final 2:35 of the opening half while forcing four turnovers. The Lyons scored the last two buckets of the stanza, with Bailey playing a role in each, and led by a 38-29 count at intermission.

The hosts twice cut their deficit to four points early in the second half, but Hickey found Bailey on a fast break to close out a 9-2 run that made it 49-38 at 15:06. Roger Williams later closed the gap to seven on a pair of occasions before Wheaton pushed its lead out to as many as 15 points at 70-55 when Pleat canned her second three-pointer in 48 seconds.

Senior Jackie Criss (Westwood, MA/Westwood) led Roger Williams, which shot 53.8 percent, by going 9-of-10 for 22 points, and classmate Jennifer Youngquist (Sandwich, MA/Sacred Heart) canned three threes off the bench en route to 11 points. Senior Casey Anderson (Cohasset, MA/Cohasset) hit all five shots she tried while finishing with 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Wheaton returns home on Thursday to face Brandeis University, which is ranked 12th in this week's D3hoops.com national poll and has been to the past three NCAA Tournaments.
