Women's Basketball (3-1) Wins SUNY New Paltz Tourney Consolation, Hickey Honored
The Wheaton College women's basketball team split a pair of games at the State University of New York at New Paltz Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend, falling to the hosts, 69-62 on Friday before winning the consolation contest, 66-53 against New York-based Farmingdale State College. Senior Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) was named to the all-tournament team.
Against SUNY New Paltz, the Lyons narrowed a 12-point deficit to one with 5:22 remaining in regulation before falling short. Hickey had 15 points and seven rebounds, while junior Andrea Bailey (Needham, MA/Needham) turned in 13 points, a career-high 12 boards, six assists and three steals. Freshman Gabbie DePalo (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) tallied nine points and seven rebounds, and junior Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) totaled eight points and seven boards.
Wheaton used a 12-0 run early in the second half against Farmingdale State to break a tie and capture the lead for good. Champney tallied 21 points while collecting 10 rebounds and four blocks, and senior Bri Smith (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) canned three three-pointers en route to 11 points. Bailey had 10 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals, while Hickey had 10 caroms. Senior Jennie Pleat (Nashua, NH/Nashua South) turned in eight points off the bench, and junior Stephanie Michals' (Fairfax, VA/Saint Stephen's and Saint Agnes School) six rebounds led all Wheaton reserves.
Hickey is fifth in program history in career points (1,218), sitting 12 shy of fourth, and she is also fifth in field goals (471) and ninth in three-pointers (75). Smith is third in threes (126), Champney is fourth in blocks (78), and Bailey is 10th in assists (206).
