Men's (1-6) and Women's (3-3-1) Swimming & Diving Complete Six-Meet Homestand

The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams completed a season-opening six-meet homestand on Saturday, as they hosted Keene State College and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) power Springfield College. The Lyon women defeated the Owls, 156-137, but fell to the eight-time defending league champion Pride, 190-109, as Springfield tied for 25th at last year's NCAA Championship. On the men's side, Wheaton fell to both Keene State, 212-82 and to the Pride, 226.5-67.5. Springfield was 14th at the 2008 NCAA meet.

A sophomore trio did most of the damage for the Lyon women, led by Dania Piscetta (Belmont, MA/Belmont), who won the 100-yard freestyle and placed second in three more events. Piscetta combined with classmates Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial), Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) for a runner-up showing in the 200 free relay. Perkins won the 200-yard breaststroke competition while notching two third-place showings, while Zais captured the 50 free race and took third in the 100 free. Wheaton's men turned in six top-three showings, with freshman Devon Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) tying for second in the 100-yard backstroke for the team's top finish. Best placed third in the 200 back and joined sophomore brother and co-captain Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood), sophomore Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John’s Prep) and freshman Cole Larson-Whittaker (Penobscot, ME/George Stevens Academy) for a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Gillie also took third in the 400-yard individual medley.
