Wheaton hosts New England Figure Meet to open season

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team hosted the annual New England Figure Meet Sunday in Balfour Natatorium, as the Lyons competed against Boston University during a non-scoring event.

Junior co-captain Laura Montes (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Academia San Jose) captured A figures, freshman Christiana Butera (San Diego, CA/Academy of Our Lady of Peace) was the top competitor in the B category, and classmate Amanda Chils (Lakeland, FL/George Jenkins) finished first in C.

Montes bested a Boston University athlete, while Butera finished ahead of two Wheaton swimmers. Senior Sharada Strasmore (Weston, CT/Weston) took second, and junior co-captain Jenna Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden) placed third.

In C, the top four placements were occupied by Lyons, as Chils was followed by first-year athletes Rachel Cordo (Wayzata, MN/Wayzata), Katherine Verbarg (Bayport, NY/Bayport-Blue Point) and Anastasia Hare (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary).

Wheaton will resume competition during another figures meet on Saturday, January 10, as the Lyons head to the University of Florida. The meet is slated for a 10:00 a.m. start.
