Swimming & Diving Saturday, November 22nd, 2008
NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams completed a season-opening six-meet homestand on Saturday in Balfour Natatorium, as they hosted Keene State College and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) power Springfield College.
The Lyon women, now 3-3-1, defeated the Owls, 156-137 but fell to the eight-time defending league champion Pride, 190-109, as Springfield tied for 25th at last year's NCAA Championship. On the men's side, Wheaton fell to both Keene State, 212-82 and to the Pride, 226.5-67.5. Springfield was 14th at the 2008 NCAA meet. The Blue and White slid to 1-6.
A sophomore trio did most of the damage for the Lyon women, led by Dania Piscetta (Belmont, MA/Belmont), who won the 100-yard freestyle and placed second in three more events. Piscetta's time of 55.67 in the 100 free was exactly one second faster than the runner up, and she finished just 0.50 seconds off the pace during the 200 free. In the 200-yard individual medley, Piscetta was 0.71 ticks behind the winner, and she combined with classmates Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial), Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) for a runner-up showing in the 200 free relay.
Perkins won the 200-yard breaststroke competition in a time of 2:33.84, outdistancing the next racer by 0.08 seconds, while notching third-place showings in both the 100 breast and 50 free, during which she was just 0.03 ticks away from claiming second. Zais captured the 50 free race in 25.63 while taking third in the 100 free. Senior co-captain Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) was third during the 100-yard backstroke, and sophomore Sara Hollar (La Crescenta, CA/Flintridge Prep) captured third in the 200-yard butterfly.
Wheaton's men turned in six top-three showings, with freshman Devon Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) tying for second in the 100-yard backstroke for the team's top finish. Best placed third in the 200 back and joined sophomore brother and co-captain Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood), sophomore Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep) and freshman Cole Larson-Whittaker (Penobscot, ME/George Stevens Academy) for a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay.
Gillie came in third during the 400-yard individual medley, sophomore Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) was third in the 100-yard butterfly, and freshman Trevor Deans (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) nabbed third in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Both Wheaton squads are off until returning to action at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational on December 5 and 6.
