Women's Soccer (16-6-2, 7-1-1) Drops 1-0 Decision in First Round of NCAA Tournament

The Wheaton College women's soccer team, which is ranked sixth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday against Eastern University of Pennsylvania, 1-0 during a contest played at Rowan University in New Jersey. The Lyons were competing in their ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament and fell for the first time in five opening-round games during the teams' initial meeting.

Eastern had a couple of chances to score early, but freshman keeper Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) made a handful of saves among the eight she recorded for the game, holding on despite fielding a slick ball on a wet pitch. The Eagles held a 15-7 advantage in shots, tallying the lone goal of the match in the 83rd minute before eventually advancing to the Sweet 16 with a Sunday win.

Sophomores Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) and Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) completed their first two seasons with their names scattered about the program's record book, as Alvarez is seventh in career goals (37) and eighth in points (81), while Hough is 10th in each points (77) and goals (27). Hough's 11 assists this year left her one shy of the single-season top 10, and her 37 points were three short of the top 10. Leddy tied for fourth in shutouts (10) and tied for seventh in wins (13), as each figure tied for second in program history among freshman keepers.
