Lyons host pair of swimming powers in Coast Guard & NYU, women tie

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams welcomed tough opposition from New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) counterpart United States Coast Guard Academy and New York University to Balfour Natatorium for a double-dual meet on Saturday afternoon.
Witnessing its first tie in the 18-year histories of either program, Wheaton drew even with Coast Guard on the women's side, as each team totaled 149.5 points. The Lyons also dropped a 218-82 decision to NYU, leaving their season mark at 2-2-1, while the men lost both to fall to 1-4. Wheaton suffered setbacks of 246-41 to the Bears and 247-46 to the Violets.
Coast Guard's men won last year's NEWMAC Championship while tying for 22nd at the NCAA meet, while the NYU men and women were ninth and 41st in the country, respectively.
Sophomore Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) won the 200-yard breaststroke and placed second in the 50 freestyle, 100 breast and 400 medley relay. Her time of 25.44 in the 50 free was 0.05 seconds shy of the leader, and her 1:10.74 finish in the 100 breast fell 0.71 seconds short of the winner.
Zais anchored the 400 medley relay, joining junior Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and sophomores Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) and Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont).
Piscetta was the runner up in the 200-yard free race and tied for second in the 100 free, finishing 0.65 ticks shy of the top time, while freshman Julia Wright's (Pomfret, VT/Northfield Mount Hermon School) score of 188.77 was 4.80 points off the best mark in the three-meter dive.
For the men, sophomore Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) came in fifth during the 100-yard backstroke, while classmates Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) and Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep) finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly, respectively.
The Lyons complete their six-event homestand one week from today against Keene State College and conference opponent Springfield College at 1:00 p.m.
