Men's (1-2) and Women's (2-1) Swimming & Diving Each Fall to NEWMAC Foe MIT
The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams each suffered losses on Saturday to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with the women falling by a 156-144 count and the men dropping a 165-95 decision. For the second straight season, the Lyon women narrowly lost to the Engineers, the nine-time defending conference runner up, after Wheaton clipped MIT by three points in December 2006.
Sophomores Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) figured in four and three wins, respectively. Perkins captured the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events, Zais won the 50-yard freestyle race, and each swam for the victorious 200 free and medley relay teams. Sophomore Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) was on both winning relays, and junior Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) swam the opening 200 medley relay leg in addition to finishing first in the 200-yard backstroke. Sophomore Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) topped the 100 free competition while anchoring the 200 free relay, and senior Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) won the 100 back. For the men, sophomore Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep) was the runner up in the 500 free while siding with classmates Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier), Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) and Ben Sabol (Saint Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep) to place second in the 200 free relay.
