Melida Alvarez
NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's soccer standout Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Co-Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, November 3. The sophomore forward shared the honor with Clark University junior Joanna Clark.
Alvarez scored Wheaton's lone two goals during a 1-0-1 week, helping the Lyons to the second seed in the conference tournament and a quarterfinal tie. She posted the overtime winner just 1:02 into the extra frame during Tuesday's 1-0 victory at Wellesley College before scoring a first-half marker in Saturday's 1-1 quarterfinal-round tie against Mount Holyoke College, as Wheaton posted a 4-1 edge in the shootout to advance to its 14th consecutive league tournament semifinal.
Having a team-high-tying 13 tallies thus far, Alvarez has also recorded four game-winners, which is just one shy of the team lead. Wheaton is 8-1-1 when she figures in the scoring column this year. Upping her career totals to 36 goals and 79 points, Alvarez is tied for seventh in program history for tallies while ranking eighth in points.
Wheaton, which is 15-4-2 and ranked fifth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), seeks its third straight NEWMAC Tournament title this weekend, as the Lyons face sixth-seeded Clark in the semifinals on Saturday at Springfield College at 5:00 p.m. Sunday's title game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
