Women earn runner-up mark at NEWMACs, men are fifth

BOSTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's cross country team posted its second straight runner-up finish and fifth since 2000 at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park, while the men placed fifth for the third consecutive fall in a meet hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The Lyons tallied 77 points on the 10-team women's side, trailing champion MIT by 50 points, as seven of the first 11 runners to cross the finish line were Engineers. Wheaton's men finished with 154 points in a seven-squad meet won by the hosts for the 11th straight year.
Seniors Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and Lauren Reddy (Walnut Creek, CA/Carondelet) brought home all-conference accolades, which requires a top-14 finish. Reddy covered the 5K course with the second-fastest time, in 18:41, as her finish marked the fourth straight season a Lyon was runner up. Rawson and Reddy earned all-league marks for the second successive fall, with Rawson taking ninth today in 19:10, while Calderwood picked up her first honor after placing 12th in 19:16.
Sophomore Erin Jaske (Highlands Ranch, CO/Rock Canyon) came across in 29th, while freshmen Kimberly Nash (Tempe, AZ/McClintock) and Rachel Scavera (North Bend, OR/North Bend) took 38th and 46th, respectively. Senior Megan O'Sadnick (Evergreen, CO/Evergreen), sophomore Christina Nelson (Cranston, RI/Saint Mary Academy-Bay View) and freshman Monica Black (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown) were within 13 placements of one another among the top 70.
Sophomore Matt Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) paced the men with a 23rd-place mark during the 8K course, while classmate Nick Kacher (Waltham, MA/Waltham) was 31st. Sophomore Colin Fahey (Waltham, MA/Weston) was Wheaton's third runner to finish, taking 49th.
Freshman Todd Woodworth (Weston, MA/Middlesex School) came in 65th, while seniors Scott Hafferkamp (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) and Dan Libon (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro), junior Miles Souza (Norton, MA/Saint Sebastian's School) and sophomore Brandon Waltz (South Thomaston, ME/Rockland District) were separated by just eight placements.
After three straight meets at Franklin Park, the Wheaton teams head out to the western side of the state to compete at the NCAA Division III New England Championship on Saturday, November 15, at Williams College. The men begin their race at 11:00 a.m., while the women are slated for a 12:00 p.m. start.
