Men's Soccer Saturday, November 1st, 2008
WORCESTER, MA- The Wheaton College men's soccer team completed its regular season slate by playing to its second consecutive scoreless tie for the first time since 1994, as the Lyons visited Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Saturday at Alumni Field.
The Lyons, who moved to 1-1-4 in overtime games this season, also tied Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 0-0 during their most recent contest last Saturday. The Blue and White is now 9-4-4 overall and completed league play at 1-3-2. WPI is 8-7-1 and 0-5-1.
Wheaton will enter the NEWMAC Tournament as the sixth seed, with the Lyons set to face number-three Clark University in Worcester on Wednesday at a time to be determined. The Blue and White won the past three NEWMAC Tournaments and has twice faced the Cougars in the postseason, winning 2-0 both times.
Despite holding advantages of 9-2 in shots and 6-1 in corner kicks during the opening half, Wheaton was held off the board. In one 1:24 span midway through the stanza, the Lyons peppered the WPI net with four shots, as junior Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) sent a header that was snuffed out by sophomore keeper Paul Moan (Watertown, MA/Watertown) at 26:58 before Moan denied sophomore Eric Driscoll (Lexington, MA/Lexington) 10 seconds later.
The Lyons put up another three attempts in a 1:08 stretch later in the half, but a pair of shots by sophomore Tyler Ostholthoff (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) were off the mark, and Moan turned aside sophomore David Ferriero's (Medway, MA/Medway) try. An Ostholthoff shot in the 41st minute went wide.
In the second stanza, Ferriero and Ostholthoff were both turned away by Moan during a nine-second span in the 74th minute, and freshman Nick Addeo (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) pushed the ball high in the 89th minute.
WPI took both of the shots in the first overtime, with sophomore Mike Ford (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson Regional) hitting the crossbar in the 98th minute, before each team recorded a pair of attempts in the second extra session. Wheaton freshman Matt Solomon (Avon, CT/Avon Old Farms) hit the crossbar with four minutes remaining before sophomore netminder Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) stopped junior Matthew Gonsalves (Swansea, MA/Joseph Case) point blank with less than a minute to go on the final opportunity for either team.
Wheaton held advantages of 17-8 in shots and 8-2 in corners, while Davidson made three saves in recording his second clean sheet of the year. Moan had seven stops.
