Women's Soccer Saturday, November 1st, 2008
NORTON, MA- The second-seeded Wheaton College women's soccer team needed penalty kicks to get past seventh seed Mount Holyoke College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament first round on Saturday at Mirrione Stadium, as the teams played to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes before the hosts posted a 4-1 shootout edge.
Wheaton, which had won the past 16 meetings between the teams, advances to next Saturday's semifinal round to face number-six Clark University at Springfield College at 5:00 p.m. Ranked fifth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll, the Lyons are now 15-4-2. Mount Holyoke finishes its season at 6-11-1.
The Blue and White converted its first four penalty kicks, including the clinching attempt from sophomore Christina Bertrand (Agawam, MA/Cathedral). After Mount Holyoke sophomore Yuko Takahashi (Tochigi, Japan/Saitama University) made the score 1-1 and Wheaton sophomore Alessia Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) went left for a 2-1 edge, Lyon freshman Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) came up with a big save on the visitors' next shot. Junior Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) and sophomore Lauren Caney (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) also scored.
Wheaton picked up the game's first goal in the 34th minute, as sophomore Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) converted junior Rosie Levy's (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) short pass from inside the box. Levy found her teammate on the doorstep, and Alvarez delivered from point-blank range for her team-high-tying 13th goal.
Mount Holyoke found the equalizer not even seven minutes into the second half. Senior Emmy Fontaine (Bolton, MA/Saint Mark's School) got just enough on her shot to get it past Leddy despite the keeper's diving attempt. Fontaine received the pass from junior Perry Markell (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth Abbey School). After a pair of goals was scored during the first 52 minutes of action, neither team was able to find the back of the net over the final 58.
Wheaton finished with a 33-9 advantage in shots, including taking all five attempts in the second overtime. The Lyons also held an 18-4 edge in corners, with 14 coming in regulation.
Leddy turned aside two shots to move to 12-3-2, while Mount Holyoke junior Elaine Harvey (Boston, MA/Saint Mark's School) had 10 saves, with five coming in the second half.
