Wheaton men and women both knock off visiting Roger Williams

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams each notched victories over Roger Williams University on Friday afternoon in Balfour Natatorium, as the women improved to 2-0 for the eighth straight year behind a 162-115 triumph, and the men moved to 1-1 thanks to a 147-137 win. Each Hawk team fell to 0-2.
Wheaton's women won all 14 swimming events, as sophomores Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) played a role in three wins apiece to pace the squad. Zais was victorious in a trio of individual events, the 50-yard breaststroke and 200-yard freestyle and individual medley events, while Farrell won the 50-yard free and butterfly races while anchoring the top 200-yard medley relay quartet. Joining Farrell on the 200 medley relay foursome were junior Stephanie Conelias (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire), sophomore Leah Rohner (Portland, ME/Deering) and freshman Sarah Miller (Madison, NJ/Madison).
Senior Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) won both the 50-yard backstroke and 100-yard free events, edging Rohner by 0.01 seconds in the 50 back. Junior Sarah Houlihan (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) won the 1,000 free in 11:28.17, finishing 20.21 seconds ahead of the runner-up, and competed for the top 400-yard free relay team, joining senior Kelly Grant (South Salem, NY/John Jay), junior Chelsea Stephenson (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) and sophomore Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy). Perkins also topped all 200-yard breaststroke competitors.
Junior Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) won the 200-yard back race, sophomore Alisha Wilson (Cumberland, ME/Greely) was the fastest 500-yard free athlete, and freshman Taryn Brosnan (Westford, MA/Academy of Notre Dame) took the 200-yard fly event.
For the men, sophomore Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep) won his first three events of the season, capturing the 100- and 200-yard free races as well as the 200-yard IM. Five teammates won once apiece, including classmate Jonathan Gold (West Harrison, NY/Fordham Prep), who totaled the most points during the three-meter dive.
Sophomores Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood), Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) and Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) captured the 200-yard fly, 500-yard free and 50 fly races, respectively, while freshman Cole Larson-Whittaker (Penobscot, ME/George Stevens Academy) notched a victory in the 1,000 free.
Wheaton continues its season-opening run of hosting 10 of its first 11 meets by entertaining Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Tufts University tomorrow for the annual Charlie Batterman Relays, which begin at 1:00 p.m.
