Women's Soccer • Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

WELLESLEY, MA- The Wheaton College women's soccer team extended its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) unbeaten streak to five games on Tuesday at Wellesley College, with sophomore Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) collecting the overtime game-winner in the 92nd minute, as the Lyons turned back the hosts, 1-0 in their regular season finale.

Entering today ranked fifth in the region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), the Lyons improved to 15-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 while clinching at least a share of the NEWMAC regular season title for the 10th consecutive year. The tournament pairings will be determined later this evening, as Wheaton needs Springfield College to either tie or lose tonight's home contest with Smith College. Wellesley is now 8-5-2 and 6-3.

After holding a decisive 26-12 shot advantage through regulation, the Lyons wasted no time breaking the stalemate in the extra session, as Alvarez scored her fourth game-winner of the season just 1:02 into the period. Alvarez went to her right and placed a shot beyond the outstretched reach of freshman goalie Sarah Gray (Montclair, VA/Forest Park) and into the lower left netting for her 12th tally of the fall.

Wheaton's best regulation chance came midway through the second half, as freshman Emily Vincunas' (Granville, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) shot went just wide of the target. With under 10 minutes to play in regulation, Wellesley strung together three straight corner kicks but came away empty. The Lyons held an 11-5 shot edge in the first half and 15-7 advantage in the second. Wheaton also took seven of the game's 13 corners.

Freshman goalie Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) picked up her ninth shutout of the season after stopping four shots, while Gray finished with 13 saves during her first collegiate start.

Wheaton is guaranteed one of the top two seeds in the conference tournament, as the Lyons will host one of four first-round games on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The semifinal and final rounds are slated for the weekend of November 8-9.
