Men's Soccer (9-4-3, 1-3-1) Goes 1-0-1, Wins Non-League Game Before Drawing at MIT

The Wheaton College men's soccer team went 1-0-1 last week, downing visiting Worcester State College, 4-1 on Wednesday before playing Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to a scoreless draw on Saturday, handing the Engineers their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) blemish. With one league game remaining, the Lyons are sixth in the seven-team league but could still finish as high as tied for fourth.

Against Worcester State, eight different players provided points during a balanced effort. Sophomores David Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway), Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) and Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) netted the first three goals, and freshman Kevin Patnode (Coventry, RI/Providence Country Day School) tallied his initial college marker with 3:06 remaining. Sophomore back David Winrow (South Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) provided two assists, while classmate Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) made two saves. The Lyons held advantages of 23-7 in shots and 10-0 in corner kicks.

Wheaton handed MIT, which is ranked fifth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) New England poll, just its second shutout in 23 games and its third non-win in 17 contests this season. The Lyons outshot the hosts, 8-6 in regulation, while Davidson finished with five stops in recording his first shutout of the season.

After Wheaton's freshmen, the Class of 2011, scored 28 of the team's 45 goals and recorded 34 of 50 assists last season, the class has played a role in 34 of 36 tallies thus far, with 28 goals and 31 assists. Solomon's 10 assists this fall are tied for fourth in program history, while Moreira's 11 goals leave him just one marker outside the single-season top 10. Solomon has 17 career helpers, one shy of the top 10.
