CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College men's soccer team played regionally-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to a 0-0, double-overtime draw on Saturday at Steinbrenner Stadium, giving the Engineers their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) blemish of the year.
The Lyons moved to 9-4-3 overall and 1-3-1 in the NEWMAC after playing to their first scoreless tie since the semifinal round of the 2006 NEWMAC Tournament against the United States Coast Guard Academy. The Engineers, who sit fifth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) New England poll, slid to 14-1-2 and 4-0-1 while remaining tied for first in the league.
Wheaton outshot the hosts, 8-6 during regulation, as it nearly broke through during the 19th minute before senior Ben Resnicow's (Newton, MA/Newton North) header was cleared off the goal line by MIT senior back Nitin Perumbeti (Norcross, GA/Norcross). With fewer than 13 minutes remaining in regulation, sophomore Jake Wagner's (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) try was denied by the diving Engineer goalkeeper.
During the overtime periods, the hosts tallied a 6-0 advantage in shots and picked up the game's lone corner kick. In the initial extra session, sophomore Christian Therkelsen (Nesbru, Norway/Nesbru) and freshman Zachary Kabelac (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) each hit the crossbar, while Wheaton sophomore keeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) punched away MIT's corner in the 103rd minute.
Davidson finished with five stops for the Lyons, who were outshot, 12-8. Senior Tom Caldwell (East Berlin, PA/Bermudian Springs) had four saves for MIT.
Wheaton, the three-time defending NEWMAC regular season and tournament champion, completes its regular season slate at league foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The conference tournament begins the following Wednesday.
