Ardito assists three on Senior Day, four score in 5-1 win over Smith
Field Hockey Saturday, October 25th, 2008
NORTON, MA- Senior Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) tallied three assists on Senior Day to tie a Wheaton College field hockey record, and four players scored to propel the Lyons past Smith College, 5-1 on Saturday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Clark Field. The Blue and White is riding a four-game winning streak and has now recorded a double-digit victory total in three straight seasons for the first time in program history.
Wheaton, which improved to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in the league, has guaranteed itself either the second or third seed in the NEWMAC Tournament, which begins next weekend. The Pioneers slid to 7-8 and 2-5 while having a three-game winning streak snapped.
Despite holding advantages of 8-4 in both shots and penalty corners during the opening stanza, Wheaton found itself down by a 1-0 count at halftime. Freshman Sarah Knowles (North Kingstown, RI/Rocky Hill School), who had hit the crossbar just three minutes into the game, tallied for Smith with 2:50 remaining in the opening stanza after tipping home senior Trina Campbell's (San Anselmo, CA/San Francisco University) penalty-corner pass.
The hosts responded quickly in the second half, scoring three early markers during a 5:39 span to take control, with Ardito playing a hand in each. Freshman Emily Asack (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) netted the equalizer at 37:56, and Ardito was denied on the doorstep in the 42nd minute by sophomore keeper Courtney Murphy (Northampton, MA/Northampton) but corralled her rebound and fed freshman Cara Cusson (Ashfield, MA/Mohawk Trail Regional) for the eventual winner at 41:04.
Wheaton completed the run by scoring for the third time on just its fourth shot of the half when junior Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) tipped Ardito's pass past Murphy at the 43:35 mark.
Asack added her second goal in the 55th minute off a Cusson penalty-corner pass, converting the fifth Lyon shot during that corner sequence, before freshman Hannah Knowles (North Kingstown, RI/Rocky Hill School) tallied her first career goal during the 63rd minute. Junior Cassie Abel's (Windham, NH/Salem) long hit nearly went untouched into the cage, but Knowles, whose twin sister Sarah scored Smith's goal, flew in to tip the ball near the goal line.
Wheaton held advantages of 18-6 in shots and 13-6 in corners, while junior Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made two saves in net. Murphy stopped four shots for the Pioneers, and junior Mary Kate Long (Boylston, MA/Tahanto Regional) had one defensive save in each stanza.
The Lyons complete their regular season slate by hosting NEWMAC foe Wellesley College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. A victory would tie Wheaton with the Blue in the final league standings and give it the second seed in the tournament, which would tie for the best seeding in program annals.
