CAMBRIDGE, MA- Senior Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) recorded her second game-winner of the season in helping lead Wheaton College to a 1-0 win at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Tuesday night at Barry Field.
The Lyons extended their winning streak to three games and were victorious for the fifth time in six contests, improving to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the league. The Engineers fell to 5-11 while remaining winless through six conference games.
Ardito scored the game-winning tally just 2:17 into play, collecting a rebound off an initial shot by freshman Emily Asack (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) and depositing the ball into the back of the cage. Junior goalie Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) and the rest of the Wheaton defense held an opponent off the board for the third straight contest for the first time since 1996.
MIT's best opportunity came early in the second half, but Bagley made consecutive saves to deny sophomores Jessica Oleinik (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and Alex Wright (Devon, PA/Conestoga) and help preserve the shutout. Asack had a chance for an insurance goal from the top of the circle in the 62nd minute, but her attempt smacked the outside of the post.
Bagley stopped four shots to pick up her fifth shutout of the season, and sophomore goalie Keri Dixon (Bethlehem, PA/Singapore American) made three saves for the Engineers, who suffered their fourth one-goal setback in the NEWMAC.
Wheaton returns home for its final two regular season games, beginning with league opponent Smith College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
