NORTON, MA- Senior Jessie Landau (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane) scored her first two goals of the season on Senior Day to propel the regionally-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team past New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 4-0 on Tuesday in Mirrione Stadium.

The Lyons, who sit sixth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) New England poll, improved to 13-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in NEWMAC play while posting their third straight shutout and notching their 17th consecutive victory over the Engineers. MIT, which had yielded a total of four goals in its prior 596:28, slipped to 4-8-2 and 2-3-2 on the season.

Just 12:33 into the contest, sophomore Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) netted the game-winner with her 24th career tally, moving the striker into a tie for 10th in program history. Freshman Emily Vincunas (Granville, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) started the play by escaping a defender near the end line and sending a centering pass to Hough, whose shot toward the middle of the net eluded senior keeper Stephanie Brenman (Newton, MA/Winsor School) after the netminder had gotten a piece of the ball.

In the 27th minute, Hough played a hand in Landau's initial tally, sending a through ball that Landau caught up with before chipping over Brenman from 10 yards out at 26:03. Just before the half, junior Lyndsey McManus' (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) indirect kick was turned aside by Brenman, but Landau rushed the box to pounce on the rebound for her second marker, at 44:10.

MIT's best opportunity in the opening half came in the 32nd minute, as freshman Vicky Thomas (Wilmot, NH/Saint Paul's School) corralled a defensive giveaway and broke toward net but hit the left post.

Landau nearly added to Wheaton's goal total in the 47th minute, but her try rolled past the left post. With less than 10 minutes remaining, the Lyons produced the final margin, as sophomore Alessia Viscomi's (Newton, MA/Newton North) shot toward the left post was denied by Brenman, but the keeper was unable to control the ball before freshman Jessica Gray (Carver, MA/Sacred Heart) struck the rebound home at 80:56.

Late in regulation, sophomore Lauren Hernley (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) had a pair of chances to break MIT into the scoring column, but freshman keeper Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) moved left to deny Hernley's short-hopping free kick bid in the 88th minute before diving to her right and tipping away an 89th-minute attempt with her right hand.

Wheaton finished with advantages of 16-7 in shots, including 13-3 in the first half, and 7-1 in corner kicks. Leddy made four saves for her eighth shutout, while Brenman stopped six shots.

The Lyons hit the road for their final two regular season contests, beginning with a trip to Smith College on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. game.
