Women's Soccer (12-4-1, 4-1-1) Posts Two Shutouts During 1-0-1 Week in NEWMAC Play

The Wheaton College women's soccer team, which is ranked sixth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) New England poll, went 1-0-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action last week behind a pair of shutouts. The Lyons played host Babson College to a scoreless draw on Tuesday before clipping Clark University, 1-0 on Saturday in Worcester. In being blanked by Springfield College on October 11 and then Babson, Wheaton suffered consecutive shutouts for the first time since September 1997, and for the initial time in league play since 1994 in the old New England Women's 8 Conference (NEW 8). With three NEWMAC games remaining, the Lyons are tied for second in the conference and have clinched one of the eight tournament spots.

At Babson, Wheaton held slim advantages of 16-12 in shots and 5-3 in corner kicks, but neither team was able to break through in 110 minutes of play. Freshman Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) made six saves, while her defensive mates cleared another two chances off the line.

Freshman Kaitlyn Mawicke (Trumbull, CT/Notre Dame Academy) tallied the first goal of her career at Clark, converting sophomore Emily Hough's (Norwich, VT/Hanover) 18th-minute pass for the only marker of the game. Wheaton outshot the Cougars, 13-6, while Leddy made one save for her seventh shutout. She's been scored on only twice in the last 386:41 of action.

Sophomore Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) is eighth in program history in career goals (34) and ninth in points (75), while Hough's 23 goals leave her one shy of the top 10. With 68 points, she is four short of the top 10. In her past 10 contests, Hough played a role in 16 of Wheaton's 23 goals, scoring six times and dishing off 10 assists.
