NORTON, MA- A pair of Wheaton College women's tennis tandems won two three-match contests apiece over the weekend at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), which had matches played at Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College and Smith College. Each duo played one doubles and two singles matches against its opponent.

Wheaton's number-one team of sophomores Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) knocked off the top teams from New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foes Bates College and Trinity College by identical 2-1 scores before coming up short against a duo from defending NCAA champion Williams College, 2-1.

Against Bates, the Lyons notched an 8-6 doubles triumph before Geocaris clinched the contest with a 3-6, 6-0, 10-4 comeback win in singles. Wheaton dropped an 8-6 doubles decision to Trinity before Geocaris picked up a 6-3, 6-2 singles triumph and Teague corralled a 6-2, 5-7, 10-2 win. The Blue and White's 8-6 loss to Williams in doubles left it down a point, and Geocaris pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 victory, but Teague lost in straight sets.

Wheaton's third team of senior Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and sophomore Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) split its four contests, downing a Trinity team, 2-1 before falling to Bates, 3-0. During consolation play, the Lyons blanked Roger Williams University, 3-0 but suffered a 3-0 loss to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Against Trinity, the Lyons notched an 8-5 doubles win and advanced thanks to Van Faasen's 6-0, 6-0 singles victory, but they narrowly dropped an 8-6 doubles decision to Bates, and Farmer fell after a long singles battle, 6-4, 4-6, 7-10. Wheaton's duo downed the Hawks, 8-2 in doubles before each Lyon won singles matches in straight sets, but Farmer and Van Faasen fell by an 8-6 count to MIT in doubles and each lost in straight sets during singles.

Wheaton's second team, comprised of junior Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) and freshman Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School), suffered 3-0 losses to the top tandems from both Bates and Smith during the tournament.

As a team, the Lyons return to action on Saturday in the first round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament at Mount Holyoke. Third-seeded Wheaton opposes number-six Smith at 11:00 a.m.
