Asack tallies first two markers, Wheaton blanks Babson, 3-0
Field Hockey Tuesday, October 14th, 2008
NORTON, MA- In her first collegiate home game, freshman Emily Asack (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) scored the initial two goals of her career, leading the Wheaton College field hockey team past Babson College, 3-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday at Clark Field. The Lyons moved to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the league, while the Beavers dropped to 9-5 and 3-2.
Wheaton, which just returned from a six-game road trip, its longest since 1983, has now captured consecutive home games against Babson for the first time since 1991 after most recently downing the Beavers in Norton during the 2006 season.
Asack, who had appeared in only four road games thus far this season while battling an injury, scored just 8:29 into her first contest at Clark Field. After receiving a long hit on the left flank from junior Cassie Abel (Windham, NH/Salem), Asack curved a shot around a group of players out front and into the right side of the cage.
The Lyons still held the 1-0 lead at halftime after taking the first seven shots of the game en route to an 11-2 advantage in the opening half. Babson's offense gained momentum in the second half, as the Beavers earned edges of 6-4 in shots and 5-0 in penalty corners, but Wheaton capitalized on its opportunities by scoring twice and notching a late defensive save.
Less than eight minutes after the intermission, senior Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) sent a centering pass to Asack, who slipped her shot beyond freshman keeper Jessica Pashos' (Winchester, MA/Winchester) extended left leg at 42:47.
With fewer than 16 minutes left and the Lyons holding a 2-0 edge against a team that was nationally ranked earlier this year, freshman back Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, CT/Shepaug Valley) cleared a ball off the goal line to keep the shutout intact, and Wheaton produced the final margin with 61 seconds remaining. Junior Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) carried into the circle, moved left to beat a defender and slid a shot into the lower left portion of the cage.
Junior Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made five saves to earn her third shutout, as the first-year starter has yielded just two goals in her past four games. Pashos made six stops, as the Lyons outshot the Beavers, 15-8, but the visitors held a 10-7 edge in corners.
The Lyons remain home on Saturday with a Homecoming contest against Clark University at 1:00 p.m.
