Moreira's overtime header lifts Lyons to 2-1 victory at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, CT- Sophomore Yuri Moreira's (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) overtime header lifted the nationally-ranked Wheaton College men's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference victory over Wesleyan University Tuesday on Jackson Field.
The Lyons, who are ranked 15th in the country and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), saw their overall record improve to 6-1-2, having won four straight. Wesleyan fell to 2-3-1 in the loss.
With a 4-2-1 series lead, the Blue and White's four victories have all been by a goal, as each of the seven meetings have been decided by no more than a tally. Wheaton's last win over the Cardinals was a 1-0 decision in 2004.
Moreira's team-leading third game-winner and seventh tally of the season came just 1:33 into the extra session. Sophomore Jake Wagner's (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) long throw-in from the right side toward the far side of the cage was touched by sophomore goalie Nigel Stacey (Seattle, WA/Seattle Prep), but Moreira was in position to head home the winner from the doorstep.
Both regulation goals took place in the opening half and just 12:07 apart, as the hosts struck first thanks to a penalty kick at 31:37. After Wheaton was called for a handball in the box, Cardinal senior Matt Nevin (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) barely beat sophomore goalkeeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School), whose diving attempt enabled him to get a piece of the ball before watching it land in the back right corner of the net.
The Lyons knotted things up just 1:16 before the break, as junior Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) converted a feed from sophomore Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional). Sussman received the pass on the left side of the box and drove his 20-yard shot just inside the right post and into the upper netting.
Davidson remained unbeaten in his eighth start, stopping a pair of Wesleyan shots, while Stacey was credited with three saves. The statistical breakdown was nearly even, as Wheaton held a slight 12-11 edge in shots, with the overtime attempt proving to be the difference. Each team took five corner kicks.
Wheaton travels to Connecticut this Friday night to square off against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe United States Coast Guard Academy at 7:00 p.m.
