Field Hockey Tuesday, September 30th, 2008
MIDDLETOWN, CT- Senior co-captain Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) and junior co-captain Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) combined to post Tuesday night's lone goal in leading the Wheaton College field hockey team to a 1-0 non-conference victory at Wesleyan University on Smith Field.
Evening their season mark at 5-5, tonight's outcome marked the Lyons' third straight win over the Cardinals. Suffering its fourth straight loss, Wesleyan slips to 1-6 overall.
The visitors wasted little time cracking the scoreboard, as Block started and finished a penalty corner within the first two minutes of action. Ardito's shot from the top of the circle was tipped in by Block at 1:20. Collecting her second game-winner and team-high fifth goal of the fall, Block has 18 career tallies and is just two shy of Wheaton's top 10.
Play was even throughout the contest, with the hosts holding a slight 8-7 advantage in shots and the Lyons edging out the Cardinals, 7-6 in corners. Of the 15 shots between the squads, just nine were on target, as the majority of play was in the midfield.
Junior goalie Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) needed to make four saves to preserve her second shutout of the season, while Wesleyan junior keeper Breen McDonald (Shaker Heights, OH/Hathaway Brown School) also turned away four shots.
Wheaton takes the remainder of the week off from competition before returning to action next Tuesday at New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) at 7:00 p.m. It will mark the team's fifth straight contest away from Norton in its six-game road swing.
